Market Overview

Argentina has a significant industrial base (automotive, oil & gas, food processing, agribusiness) but operates under complex economic and regulatory conditions. Market opportunity exists especially in spare parts, retrofits, and maintenance.

Import Conditions

  • Prior filing: the advance import declaration that ran from SIMI through SIRA to SEDI was repealed by ARCA and the Secretariat of Industry and Commerce under Joint General Resolution 5651/2025, applying from 26 February 2025. Obtaining a filing number before shipment is no longer required.
  • Repealing the prior filing did not remove product-level requirements. Whether a non-automatic import licence or a sector approval applies is decided by the NCM tariff position, so confirm the requirements for your exact position before you ship.
  • Import duty: depends on the NCM position. Decree 513/2025, in force from 30 July 2025, cut the duty on a set of capital-goods positions to 12.6%, but that list is specific and does not automatically cover CNC lathes and machining centres. Have the rate confirmed against your position by a local customs broker.
  • Beyond duty there are the statistics tax, VAT and advance income-tax perceptions. A registered importer can credit a good part of these, so they are not all final cost. Ask for a landed-cost calculation on the actual position rather than applying a single percentage.
  • Currency: ARS (Peso) — historically volatile. Transactions in USD strongly preferred.
  • Paying abroad: import payments go through the exchange market under the BCRA rules in force on the payment date. The importer should confirm the current procedure and paperwork with its own bank.
  • Main port: Buenos Aires (Ezeiza for air, Exolgan/TRP for sea)

Practical Considerations

  • Payment in advance or L/C preferred — open account risky
  • Confirm the licensing position for your tariff code early; where a non-automatic licence applies, allow the extra lead time it adds
  • Local agent or representative strongly recommended
  • Retrofit and spare parts market growing — less import friction than complete machines
