When buying a CNC machine tool from Taiwan, choosing the right Incoterm is critical. Two of the most commonly discussed terms are EXW (Ex Works) and FOB (Free on Board). But which one actually protects your business? The comparison below applies to machines shipped in a sea container. Small parts orders follow a different pattern, covered at the end.

⚠️ The Trap of EXW
Many buyers are tempted by EXW because the initial quote looks cheaper. Under EXW, the seller simply makes the goods available at their factory. However, the buyer must handle everything, including local inland transport and Taiwan export customs clearance. For buyers in Switzerland, Brazil, or Argentina, handling export declarations without a local registered entity in Taiwan is extremely risky and can lead to costly delays.
工廠交貨的陷阱： 許多買家被 EXW 較低的報價吸引，但在 EXW 條件下，賣方僅在工廠備妥貨物，買方須自行負責所有後續作業，包括台灣境內的內陸運輸及出口報關。對於在台灣沒有登記法人的瑞士、巴西或阿根廷買家而言，自行處理台灣出口申報風險極高，稍有不慎即可能導致嚴重的通關延誤與罰款。
EXW의 함정: 많은 구매자들이 초기 견적이 저렴해 보여 EXW에 끌립니다. EXW 조건에서 매도인은 단순히 공장에서 물품을 제공하기만 합니다. 그러나 매수인이 모든 것을 처리해야 합니다. 내륙 운송과 대만 수출 통관까지 포함됩니다. 대만에 등록 법인이 없는 스위스, 브라질, 아르헨티나 구매자에게 이는 매우 위험하며 큰 비용과 지연을 초래할 수 있습니다.
✅ Why FOB is the Industry Standard
In Taiwan's machine tool export market, FOB Taichung or FOB Kaohsiung is the most practical standard. Under FOB, the seller handles all local transport, port fees, and export customs clearance. The risk and cost only transfer to you once the goods are safely loaded onto the vessel, a clear division of responsibility that prevents unexpected port charges and compliance issues.
為何 FOB 是業界標準： 在台灣工具機出口市場，FOB 台中港或 FOB 高雄港是最通行的標準。FOB 條件下，賣方負責處理所有內陸運輸、港口費用及出口報關。風險與費用只在貨物安全裝上船後才轉移給買方，明確的責任劃分有效防止意外港口費用及法規遵循問題。
FOB가 업계 표준인 이유: 대만 공작기계 수출 시장에서 FOB 타이중 또는 FOB 가오슝이 가장 실용적인 표준입니다. FOB 조건에서 매도인이 모든 내륙 운송, 항만 비용, 수출 통관을 처리합니다. 위험과 비용은 물품이 선박에 안전하게 적재된 후에야 귀하에게 이전됩니다. 이러한 명확한 책임 분담이 예상치 못한 항만 비용과 규정 준수 문제를 방지합니다.

For buyers purchasing a machine, we strongly recommend avoiding EXW. Choose FOB (or FCA for containerized sea freight) to ensure a smooth, compliant, and predictable supply chain. Parts orders work differently. Part shipments are usually small in quantity and modest in value, so they almost always move by air, and under Incoterms 2020 FOB does not apply to air freight at all; it is defined for sea and inland waterway transport only. We therefore quote parts EXW as standard, and FOB only where a buyer specifically asks for it.
