Why Power Compatibility Decides Commissioning
When buying a CNC machine internationally, attention usually goes to machine construction, machining capacity, spindle specification and controller brand — FANUC, Mitsubishi, Siemens or SYNTEC. Yet many overseas commissioning failures start somewhere more basic: the actual power supply available at the destination factory.A CNC machine is not a single electrical load. It may contain spindle drives, servo drives, control transformers, hydraulic pumps, coolant pumps, lubrication units, spindle chillers, chip conveyors, bar feeders, high-pressure coolant systems and other accessories. These components do not necessarily share the same voltage and frequency tolerance.
Incorrect voltage, excessive fluctuation, incompatible frequency, poor grounding or an undersized transformer can cause overvoltage, undervoltage, overheating and communication alarms. In severe cases, power modules, drives, contactors, circuit boards or pump motors may be damaged. Power compatibility therefore belongs in the quotation stage — not after the machine arrives.
1. Four Power Specifications to Confirm
Voltage. Confirm the factory's actual measured supply rather than relying only on the national standard. Common industrial voltages include 200, 208, 220, 230, 240, 380, 400, 415, 440, 460 and 480 V. Even within one country, voltage can differ between regions, utilities, industrial parks and older facilities. Before shipment, ask the buyer for panel photographs, existing machine nameplates and on-site measurements.
- Line-to-line voltage
- Line-to-neutral voltage
- Nominal voltage and permitted tolerance
- Voltage fluctuation during peak production
- Factory transformer capacity
- Main and branch breaker capacity
Frequency. Industrial grids run at either 50 or 60 Hz. Frequency sets the speed of line-powered AC induction motors, and therefore affects pump flow, fan volume, transformer temperature rise, and the operating conditions of some contactors, relays and coils. Verify it specifically for:
- Hydraulic pumps
- Coolant pumps
- Lubrication pumps
- Spindle chillers
- Cabinet fans
- Chip conveyors
- Mist collectors
- Bar feeders and other external equipment
Phase and distribution. Most industrial CNC machines take three-phase power, but still confirm:
- Three-wire or four-wire supply
- Whether a neutral is available
- Grounding system
- Phase sequence
- Whether high-leg delta or another special configuration is present
- Auxiliary control voltage
Neutral and protective earth serve different purposes and must never be treated as interchangeable.
Available capacity. Correct voltage does not mean sufficient capacity. The facility must also absorb machine startup, spindle acceleration, rapid axis movement and several accessories running at once:
- Machine rated kVA
- Rated and full-load current
- Main breaker rating
- Cable size
- Starting and instantaneous peak current
- Short-circuit capacity
- Additional load from every accessory
2. Common Global Industrial Power Conditions
Use the table for early planning only — never as an installation specification.
| Market | Common industrial supply | Procurement note |
|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | 220 or 380 V / 60 Hz | Confirm machine input and the in-plant transformer arrangement |
| China | Commonly 380 V / 50 Hz | Confirm voltage tolerance and grounding requirements |
| Europe | Commonly 400 V / 50 Hz | Confirm CE and local electrical safety requirements |
| USA & Canada | 208, 230, 240, 460 or 480 V / 60 Hz | Distribution is varied — check for high-leg delta and similar configurations |
| Japan | Commonly 200 V; eastern Japan largely 50 Hz, western Japan largely 60 Hz | Frequency must be confirmed against the actual installation region |
| South Korea | Commonly 380 V, three-phase, 60 Hz | Confirm whether a neutral and 220 V auxiliary supply are available |
| Switzerland | Commonly 400 V, three-phase, 50 Hz | Confirm CE documentation and local protective device requirements |
| Argentina | Commonly 380/400 V, three-phase, 50 Hz | Check voltage stability and the surge environment |
| Southeast Asia | Mostly 380–415 V / 50 Hz | Exceptions exist — the Philippines commonly runs 60 Hz |
| Brazil | 60 Hz, voltage varies by state and by facility | Obtain measured site data; the country name alone is not enough |
National standards are a reference only. The final specification must rest on measured voltage at the installing plant, its distribution drawing, and confirmation by a qualified electrical professional.
3. Voltage Can Be Changed — What About Frequency?
"Just add a transformer" solves half the problem. A transformer can step 480 V down to 220 V, or 220 V up to 380 V, but a 60 Hz input stays 60 Hz on the output, and a 50 Hz input stays 50 Hz. Before relying on one, confirm that every component inside the machine supports the destination frequency.
Servo and spindle systems. Modern servo and spindle drives normally rectify incoming AC to DC and then synthesise their output from control commands, so grid frequency does not directly set servo motor speed. That is not the same as saying the machine is compatible. Still verify:
- Drive permitted input voltage and frequency
- Power supply module rating
- Regenerative unit
- Braking resistor
- Line reactor
- Noise filter
- Internal fans and auxiliary supplies
Auxiliary induction motors. Coolant pumps, hydraulic pumps, fans and chip conveyors are commonly line-powered induction motors, whose speed follows frequency directly.
60 Hz equipment on a 50 Hz supply — synchronous speed falls by about 16.7%, which can produce:
- Reduced coolant flow
- Insufficient high-pressure CTS pressure
- Reduced hydraulic delivery
- Insufficient cooling airflow
- Weaker chip evacuation in the cutting zone
If supply voltage is not adjusted to keep a sensible V/Hz ratio, motor flux and temperature rise can also increase.
50 Hz equipment on a 60 Hz supply — speed rises by about 20%. Current does not necessarily increase in every case, but it can produce:
- Pump speed beyond its design point
- Changed flow, pressure and shaft power demand
- Fans or mechanical assemblies running overspeed
- Shortened bearing life
- More noise and vibration
Pump loads deserve particular care: for a centrifugal pump, flow, head and absorbed power all change with speed. Whether the motor merely turns is not the test.
The dependable approach is to state the destination voltage, frequency, phase, grounding system, available capacity and local regulations at order stage. The builder can then fit pumps, fans, chillers and transformers that already match, and specify an inverter for an individual motor where that is appropriate. Feeding an entire CNC control cabinet from a single inverter is not advisable without a full engineering assessment.
4. Subsystems That Need Individual Verification
Main control cabinet — main switch, breakers, line reactor, EMI/noise filter, control transformer, power supplies, surge protection, contactor and relay coil voltages.
CNC and drive system — controller, servo amplifiers, spindle amplifier, regenerative unit, braking resistor, drive cooling fans, I/O and 24 VDC supplies.
Hydraulic, cooling and lubrication — hydraulic pump motor, standard coolant pump, high-pressure CTS pump, lubrication pump, spindle chiller, oil cooler, cabinet air conditioner, mist collector.
External equipment — do not assume accessories share the machine's supply. Check bar feeders, chip conveyors, robots, gantry loaders, parts catchers, extraction or dust collection, third-party cooling systems, and any external stabiliser or transformer separately.
5. Auto-transformer vs. Isolation Transformer
Where the factory supply differs from the machine's rated voltage, a transformer is usually required — for example a 480 V supply feeding a machine rated 220 V.
Auto-transformer — primary and secondary share part of one winding. Compact, lighter, lower cost and generally efficient. Its limits: there is no galvanic isolation, primary-side common-mode noise and fault conditions can pass through more readily, and it cannot on its own establish a separately derived secondary system. Reasonable where grid quality is stable, the conversion ratio is modest, isolation is not specifically required, and both the machine builder and the local electrical professional accept it.
Isolation transformer — separate primary and secondary windings coupled magnetically. It provides galvanic isolation, supports an engineered secondary distribution arrangement, and with an electrostatic shield can help attenuate some common-mode high-frequency noise. Worth specifying for five-axis machining centres, high-precision mill-turn machines, plants with unstable supply, sites sharing a feeder with punch presses, welders or large inductive loads, where the builder or local code requires isolation, or where the control system is sensitive to power quality.
An isolation transformer is not a complete power-protection system. Guarding against lightning surge, high-frequency noise or voltage sag may still call for surge protective devices (SPD), EMI/RFI filters, line reactors, voltage regulation, voltage monitoring relays, and correct shielding and grounding.
Grounding and neutral. Whether the isolation transformer's secondary establishes a neutral point, and how neutral bonds to protective earth, must follow local electrical code, the machine builder's electrical drawing, the controller installation manual and the site grounding system. Never bond neutral to earth without a designed arrangement. There is likewise no single grounding-resistance figure valid for every CNC machine worldwide — follow the equipment manual, local code and the site protection design rather than applying a blanket "must be below 10 Ω".
6. Selecting Transformer Capacity (kVA)
Capacity cannot be chosen from spindle motor power alone, nor from normal running current alone. Account for machine rated demand, spindle acceleration, servo rapid movement, hydraulic and coolant pumps, spindle chiller, chip conveyor, bar feeder, high-pressure coolant, cabinet air conditioner, accessories that may be added later, harmonic and non-linear loads, and the transformer's ambient temperature and ventilation.
Where full load data is unavailable, roughly 1.2 to 1.5 times the builder's stated total demand can serve as an initial planning range. A confirmed 30 kVA requirement might lead to an early look at 36, 40 or 45 kVA. That is a starting estimate only — it does not mean every 30 kVA machine needs the same transformer.
Final selection should follow the builder's recommended input capacity, machine rated current, peak and simultaneous loads, transformer impedance, permitted voltage drop, environmental derating and local electrical code. An undersized transformer tends to show up as voltage sag during spindle acceleration or heavy cuts, producing undervoltage alarms and unplanned stoppages.
7. Information to Obtain Before Quotation
The overseas buyer should supply:
- Installation country and city; factory address
- Measured line-to-line voltage
- Measured line-to-neutral voltage
- Grid frequency
- Number of phases; whether a neutral exists
- Grounding arrangement
- Main breaker capacity and available kVA
- Permitted voltage tolerance
- Local electrical code or certification requirements
- Complete accessory list
- Ambient temperature and humidity
- Photographs of the distribution panel and existing machine nameplates
Once agreed, write the confirmed power specification into the quotation, the purchase order, the technical agreement, the machine specification sheet and the factory acceptance documents.
8. Pre-Shipment Electrical Checklist
Machine builder / supplier
- Confirm destination voltage, frequency and phase
- Check every motor and accessory nameplate
- Confirm transformer input, output and tap settings
- Confirm breakers, fuses and cable sizes
- Confirm contactor, relay and solenoid coil voltages
- Update the electrical drawing and parts list
- Update the machine nameplate
- Include every accessory in the load calculation
- Test phase sequence, insulation and protective earth
- Record no-load and full-load current; keep alarm and test records
Overseas buyer / end user
- Provide measured site voltage
- Confirm main breaker and cable capacity
- Arrange a qualified electrician
- Complete distribution work before the machine arrives
- Do not change transformer taps without the builder's agreement
- Re-check phase sequence and grounding before energising
- Where the supply is unstable, evaluate SPD, voltage regulation and power monitoring
Factory acceptance test (FAT) — where conditions allow, run the powered acceptance test at voltage and frequency close to the destination, covering spindle start and top speed, rapid traverse on each axis, hydraulics, coolant pumps, high-pressure CTS, spindle chiller, chip conveyor, bar feeder, safety circuits, and voltage and current with several devices running together.
9. Common Overseas Commissioning Mistakes
- Adding a transformer after arrival. It may correct voltage, but not frequency — auxiliary pumps and fans can still be incompatible.
- Checking only the CNC controller. Controller and servo drives may accept a wide voltage range while the hydraulic pump, chiller and chip conveyor do not.
- Assuming one voltage per country. North America, Brazil, Japan and parts of Southeast Asia in particular need plant-by-plant confirmation.
- Sizing the transformer exactly. Ignoring spindle acceleration, pump starting and simultaneous accessory operation invites voltage sag and undervoltage alarms.
- Treating an isolation transformer as a cure-all. It does not replace surge protection, filtering, regulation and correct grounding.
- Forgetting third-party accessories. Bar feeders, robots, high-pressure CTS and mist collectors may run on a different supply.
- Adjusting transformer taps freely. A wrong tap can distort downstream control voltage and damage power supplies, coils or drives.
Z&Z STROTEC Procurement Advice
The safer route in cross-border CNC procurement is not to add a transformer once the machine lands, but to design, configure and test for the destination supply during manufacture. At order confirmation, put at least the following into the contract and technical specification:
- Actual factory input voltage and permitted tolerance, e.g. 480 V ±10%
- Grid frequency — 50 Hz or 60 Hz
- Confirmation that all coolant pumps, hydraulic pumps, fans and accessory motors match the destination frequency
- Whether a transformer is supplied with the machine
- Auto-transformer or isolation type
- Transformer rated kVA, taps, impedance and environmental derating
- Local grounding and electrical code requirements
- The voltage and frequency used for the FAT
Sound electrical planning does more than protect drives and motors: it reduces commissioning delays, unplanned downtime and later warranty disputes.
